Support for Refugees in Davenport

Ontario's response to the ongoing Refugee Crisis and how you can help.

Ontario continues to be a welcoming and inclusive society and we are working to ensure a seamless, co-ordinated and appropriate support for refugees arriving in Ontario. We support the federal government’s plan to welcome 25,000 Syrian refugees to Canada by the end of February 2016. The recent arrival of Syrian refugees marks the first step in reaching our shared goal of settling 10,000 refugees by the end of 2016.

Our province has committed $10.5M in new funding over two and a half years to support the implementation of the Newcomer Settlement Plan in response to the Refugee Crisis:
  • $8.5 million will be used to support refugee resettlement and integration through transfer payments to settlement agencies to ensure capacity to respond to both short and longer-term needs of private and publicly sponsored refugees.
  • $2 million will be used to support refugee relief efforts overseas through the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the World Food Programme.
In addition to providing this support, our Government has established a central website providing information and links for constituents to contribute in many ways, such as making a donation, sponsoring a family, or volunteering.
Ontario continues to help and we have been a strong supporter of the work of organizations like Lifeline Syria, Clay and Paper Theatre here in Davenport, and the Clothing Drive who provide essential services for Syrian refugees and help facilitate private sponsorship by families and organizations. In addition to these organizations there have been individuals, families and schools accross Davenport have been contributing clothing, funds and more to help the refugees arriving in the coming weeks.

The website can be found here:
If you are able to provide services – such as potential lodging sites, or equipment and services - to assist in the arrival and settlement of these refugees please do not hesitate to contact our office by phone at 416-535-3158 or We have been collecting clothing and will be doing so well into the new year.
